The Short Story:Â VCU staged a three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth, capped off with an RBI single by senior A.J. Mathis on Senior Day to stake claim to an important series win over rival Richmond and improve their standing in the Atlantic 10.
LEADING OFF:
- Mathis went 2-of-5 at the plate with a pair of base hits.
- Overall, Mathis batted 5-of-13 (.384) for the weekend, boosting his season batting average to .365.
- This was Mathis' 24th multi-hit game of the season, leading all Rams.
- Cooper Benzin hit 2-of-4 on the afternoon, with a double, an RBI single, and two runs scored.Â
- Nic Ericsson threw out his 21st base runner of the season, including two Spiders this weekend.
- Campbell Ellis stepped up as the starting pitcher, allowing only two runs in five innings of work.
- Evan Bert and Brendan Erka combined to let up just one Richmond run in four innings of relief.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â
- Richmond got on the board early when Jared Sprague-Lott reached home off of a sacrifice fly in foul territory by Jordan Jaffe.
- The Spiders tacked on to their lead in the third courtesy of a Jake Elbeery RBI single through the right side that brought home Jaffe.
- VCU broke through in the bottom of the fifth inning after a wild pitch by Richmond starter Kyle Subers, which opened the door for Benzin to slide safely into home, cutting the Spider lead in half at 2-1 after five.
- The two city rivals traded zeroes on the scoreboard until the top of the eighth inning. Richmond extended their lead when Zach Lass singled to left field, scoring Aiden Mathes, putting the Spiders out front 3-1 going into the ninth.
- Jake Thilges began the Rams' ninth-inning rally with a double to center field.
- One batter later, Benzin swatted a single to left center, plating Thilges and cutting the deficit to one at 3-2.
- After Logan Amiss bunted Benzin into scoring position, Nic Ericsson walked to put two on for Griffin Boone.
- Boone followed up his walk-off hit yesterday with a game-tying single through the right side, bringing home Benzin.
- Mathis then stepped in and drove a 2-2 pitch into right field for a single. Ericsson reached home easily, and the celebration was on for the victorious Black and Gold. Â
