RAMS WALK OFF SLU IN 11TH TO SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER; TAKE WEEKEND SERIES

GAME ONE
Final Score: Saint Louis 10, VCU 5
Winning Pitcher: Jack Weber (2-2)
Losing Pitcher: Campbell Ellis (5-4)
Location: Richmond, Va. (The Diamond)
Records: VCU 21-22 (7-7), Saint Louis 25-15 (10-4)

The Short Story: VCU Baseball dropped the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader, giving up three runs in the sixth to erase a comeback attempt against Saint Louis.

LEADING OFF:
  • The Rams trailed early, but they worked their way back into the game tying it at 4-4. But three Saint Louis runs in the sixth and three more in the ninth would be too much for the Rams to overcome.
  • William Bean went a perfect 4-for-4 in the game and scoring a run.
  • Nic Ericsson added a multi-hit day, going 2-for-4 with one RBI and two doubles.
  • Jake Thilges had a home run in the game, his fourth of the season.
  • Cooper Benzin, Brandon Eike, Thilges, Scottie O'Bryan and Ethan Brooks all added a hit in the game.
  • Justin Humenay got the start but left after 1.1 innings of work due to injury.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Saint Louis scored four runs in the second to take an early 4-0 lead on the Rams.
  • They scored their runs on four-straight two-out singles.
  • In the bottom half of the second, Thilges led the frame off with a bomb. Taking a 1-2 pitch to left field for a home run that smacked off the PowerBall sign to put the Rams on the board.
  • O'Bryan got the Rams one run closer in the third with an RBI single to center that scored Eike (HBP).
  • Ericsson then tied the game with an RBI double to left that scored both O'Bryan and Bean (HBP), knotting the game up at 4-4.
  • Both sides traded zeros until the sixth when Saint Louis pulled away. The Billikens scored three runs in the frame, and after a double to left from Hayden Moore the Billikens retook the lead at 7-4.
  • VCU did get one back in the sixth when Benzin knocked in Brooks (single) but three more runs in the top of the ninth from SLU gave the Billikens what they needed to lock up the first game of the Atlantic 10 doubleheader.
GAME TWO
Final Score: VCU 7, Saint Louis 6 (11 innings)
Winning Pitcher: Brian Curley (2-2)
Losing Pitcher: Jack Dumont (0-1)
Location: Richmond, Va. (The Diamond)
Records: VCU 22-22 (8-7), Saint Louis 25-16 (10-5)

The Short Story: Behind five-plus shutdown innings by Brian Curley, VCU Baseball erased yet another early hole, completing its second comeback off the weekend when Mathis knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the 11th to walk off the Saint Louis Billikens and give VCU the A-10 weekend series.

LEADING OFF:
  • VCU went down early, falling in a 4-0 hole after three innings, but Curley's 5.1 innings of shutout ball gave the Rams what they needed to fight back in the game.
  • The Rams tied things in the seventh and would win on an 11th-inning walk off base hit by Mathis.
  • It is the Rams' second walk-off win if the season and the longest game of the season.
  • This was the longest game since a 12-inning win over Georgetown (May 17, 2022).
  • The 11 innings was the longest A-10 game for VCU since playing 11 innings against Richmond on Apr. 21, 2019.
  • Curley's final line was 5.1 IP/5 H/0 R/0 ER/6 K/1 BB/81 NP. The innings pitched and pitches thrown are career highs and Curley's six strikeouts tie a career-high.
  • Mathis went 3-for-5 in the leadoff spot, knocking in one run and scoring two runs.
  • Bean added a hit of his own, knocking in two runs and scoring one run.
  • James Gladden got the start and battled through 5.2 innings, keeping VCU in the game as they battled back.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Saint Louis scored four runs over the first four innings, taking an early 4-0 lead just like they did in the first game of the day.
  • They added two in the sixth but Gladden's toughness showed during his outing. Battling through the early struggles to post three innings of zeros and his work kept the Rams in the game.
  • During the fourth VCU got on the board, Mathis led things off with a double and following a Bean double came around to score VCU's opening run of the game.
  • Will Carlone recorded the first of two sacrifice flies to bring home Bean and put it at 4-2.
  • In the fifth VCU added one more when Griffin Boone (pinch run) scored on a fielding error after Mathis put the ball in play, making it 4-3.
  • Saint Louis scored a pair in the sixth, knocking Gladden out but Curley got out of the frame without giving up any more and the score sat at 6-3 in SLU's favor.
  • The Billikens would not score another run for the next five innings as Curley allowed just seven base runners over the remainder of the game.
  • VCU knotted the game up in the seventh, and it began on a pair of hit by pitches putting both Ericsson and O'Bryan on.
  • Brooks moved the two over and Mathis loaded the bases after drawing a one-out walk. Following a pitching change the Rams kept it rolling as Bean drew yet another walk to score O'Bryan and keep the bases loaded.
  • Ericsson scored when Eike reached on a fielding error by the pitcher Luke Gasser and after Carlone's second sac fly of the game the Rams tied the game at 6-6.
  • Both sides traded zeros over the next three frames as the game rolled into extra innings.
  • Saint Louis did threaten in the 10th. Moore led the frame off with a single up the middle and after being moved over on a sacrifice bunt he stole third to put the go-ahead run 90 feet away with just one out.
  • Curley dug in, having already tossed three-plus innings got the next batter out on a ground out and the final out on a fly ball to center to keep SLU off the board.
  • The 11th began when O'Bryan was hit by a pitch and after Ericsson bunted for a single the winning run was in scoring position.
  • Brooks bunted and reached on a fielder's choice when the SLU's Cody Jansen went to third looking to get O'Bryan but the throw was late and it left the bases loaded with no outs.
  • Mathis then stepped in the box and with the SLU infield in fisted a floater into shallow left center knocking in O'Bryan to score the winning run.
  • The VCU dugout then emptied out chasing Mathis all the way into the right field corner, celebrating the big walk-off win and the A-10 series win with a 7-6 victory.
UP NEXT: VCU hits the road for the next five games. They first head to No. 13 Virginia on May 2 before heading to Davidson for a conference series that will run from May 4-6. The Rams then wrap up the stretch with another midweek trip, this time to Longwood on May 9.
