The Short Story:  VCU Baseball's late comeback attempt fell just short, as after tying the game in the eighth inning St. Bonaventure would score in the ninth to take the second game of the weekend.

LEADING OFF:
  • VCU scored three runs in the eighth to tie it at 6, but in the top of the ninth the Bonnies answered with a run of their own to create a lead they would hold in the bottom half of the ninth
  • This was the second game the Rams and Bonnies played today, having finished the previous night's game with four-plus innings before starting this second game.
  • Starting pitcher Zachary Peters worked for five innings allowing six hits, five runs and striking out five batters
  • The Rams had four batters have two hits in the game including AJ Mathis, Will Carlone, Jake Thilges, and Ethan Brooks
  • Brooks also scored two runs and batted in a run
  • James Gladden pitched 3.2 innings of relief work allowing two hits, one earned run, and striking out three
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Rams managed to get on the board quickly when Eike hit a sacrifice fly out to left field which scored Cooper Benzin, who had singled earlier in the inning to get on base
  • The Bonnies struck back in the third inning by scoring three runs
  • Peters got a much-needed 1-2-3 inning in the third
  • St. Bonaventure tacked on two more runs in the fourth to make the score 5-1
  • The Rams responded well in the bottom of the fifth when Nic Ericcson walked, Brooks hit a single, and Mathis walked to load the bases. Benzin, the next batter up, walked to bring in a run
  • St. Bonaventure's Watts threw a wild pitch which scored Brooks
  • Gladden entered the game in the sixth and threw a 1-2-3 inning
  • St. Bonaventure added a run in the top of the seventh
  • With two outs, the Rams scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game. A wild pitch scored William Bean, Brook's single scored Logan Amiss, and Mathis's single allowed Brooks to score on a throwing error to tie the game
  • The Bonnies scored a run in the top of the ninth to take the lead, making the score 7-6
  • VCU loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning on three hits but were unable to convert any of the baserunners to end the game and give St. Bonaventure the win.
UP NEXT: VCU goes for the series win against St. Bonaventure tomorrow, Sunday, April 2 at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
