The Short Story: Strong starting pitch from South Florida quieted the VCU Baseball bats as the Rams fell to South Florida in the second game of the three-game weekend.
Â
LEADING OFF:Â
- South Florida's starter (Hunter Mink) went six innings and held the Rams to three hits while striking out six.
- AJ Mathis had a good day in the leadoff spot, going 3-for-4 and stealing his seventh base of the season.
- VCU had a strong finish on the mound, getting a pair of scoreless one-hit innings from Maison Martinez and Brian Curley to finish the game.
- The Rams did not commit an error in the game making it the fifth-straight game VCU has been clean in the field. That is the first time the Rams have had such a stretch since 2019 when they went six games without committing an error.
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â
- South Florida scored in the first (one), third (two), fourth (three), fifth (one) and sixth innings (two). The Bulls got their runs off starting pitcher Peters and Cam Nuckols, who came in to start the fifth frame. But the Rams pitching was able to hold USF from having any big innings throughout the scoring.
- The Rams did threaten the Bulls in the third, with the score sitting at 1-0 Mathis singled to left with one out. He then stole second, but the Rams were unable to get him home in one of the better offensive opportunities the Rams had in the game.
- Over the final two frames, VCU got solid pitching from Martinez and Curley.
- In the seventh Martinez worked around a lead-off walk to get the next three batters. The final out was a punchout and with a slight fist pump Martinez finished off the frame.
- Curley got out of a situation in the eighth where South Florida had put two base runners on. With only one out, Curley found an extra gear and struck out the next two batters, his first two career strikeouts to end the South Florida threat.
UP NEXT: The Rams and Bulls return to action on tomorrow, with the series in the balance. The game is set to get going at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
