Â
The Short Story:Â
Mason Delane pitched a gem at the Diamond, throwing a complete game shutout and striking out seven to spearhead the Rams' weekend sweep of NJIT. It is VCU's sixth win in the past seven games.Â
Â
LEADING OFF:Â
- Delane went the full nine, striking out seven while allowing just two hits and he stayed under 100 pitches to complete the "Maddux".
- Delane's outing marked the first time a VCU pitcher has gone the distance since Sean Thompson did it against La Salle on March 24, 2017.
- It was the first complete game shutout for the Black and Gold since Brooks Vial held Marist scoreless all the way back on March 7, 2016.
- Delane became the third Atlantic 10 pitcher to throw a complete game this season and the 49th in the country.
- At the plate, AJ Mathis led the Rams, going 2-of-4 from the leadoff spot.
- Catcher Nic Ericsson flexed his arm behind the plate, throwing out NJIT baserunners at second in both the third and fourth innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â
- It was a back-and-forth pitcher's duel the whole way. VCU's first hit came in the bottom of the second when Jake Thilges singled to right center, advancing Brandon Eike to third base.
- In the next at-bat, Scottie O'Bryan hit a grounder to third base, and the NJIT third baseman's throw home was off the mark, allowing Eike to cross home plate for what turned out to be the game's lone run.
- NJIT rarely threatened to tie the game, leaving only one runner on base the whole afternoon
- Delane finished his complete game by retiring the side in the top of the ninth, capped off by NJIT's Kevin Putsky grounding out to second baseman Ethan Brooks, who tossed the ball to Thilges at first for the final out.
UP NEXT:Â VCU completes its eight-game homestand at the Diamond this Tuesday, Mar. 21, when they play host to the Longwood Lancers out of the Big South Conference. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
