Winning Pitcher: Jack Cone (3-0)
Losing Pitcher: Evan Bert (0-1)
Location: Richmond, Va. (The Diamond)

The Short Story: A big third inning from James Madison was the difference as VCU Baseball scored five runs over the final four innings but could not complete a comeback against the Dukes, losing 14-6 at The Diamond.

LEADING OFF:
  • Evan Bert made his first career start, going 1.2 innings.
  • Kyras Dawson and Jack Goleski gave VCU a strong five combined innings of relief giving up just one run each on six combined hits.
  • Brandon Eike continued to swing a strong bat, going 2-for-4 with a double and one run batted in.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • James Madison opened the game with two runs in the first, one in the second and a big eight runs in the third to jump on the Rams 11-1 in the first hour-plus of the game.
  • The Rams got their first run of the game in the bottom half of the first inning when Cooper Benzin led off with a walk, he then advanced to third on two wild pitches. Eike then smashed one into right field that nearly got over JMU's Jaylon Lee but the Duke right-fielder snagged the ball and was able to double up William Bean who had aggressively rounded second.
  • Benzin did score before the double play was finished off at first to give VCU its first run of the game.
  • In the third, JMU scored the runs they needed to put the game out of reach. In the frame the Dukes scored eight, five runs came from RBI singles as James Madison took an 11-1 lead after three.
  • Both sides remained scoreless through the fourth and fifth, but the Rams got on the board with three in the sixth and a pair in the eighth.
  • Eike again got things rolling in the sixth, smacking a lead off double. He was replaced by Jesse Robinson Jr. who hit an RBI double of his own to score Eike.
  • Nic Ericsson doubled home Robinson Jr. and Scottie O'Bryan smacked a single to left that scored Ericsson to make it 12-4.
  • Two more Ram runs crossed the plate in the eighth. Casey Gibbs reached on a hit by pitch and after Griffin Boone walked a pair of Rams were on to open the frame.
  • O'Bryan then rolled one to first but a bit of confusion between the pitcher and first basemen allowed O'Bryan to reach and load up the bases full of Rams.
  • Gibbs scored on a wild pitch and with Boone at third (wild pitch) Benzin recorded an RBI on a ground out.
  • JMU added a run in the sixth, eighth and ninth to keep the Rams at arms-length and finish off the 14-6 win.
UP NEXT: VCU stays at The Diamond for a weekend visit from NJIT that begins on Friday, Mar. 17. VCU will host NJIT on Saturday, Mar. 18 and Sunday, Mar. 19.
