The Short Story: No. 13 North Carolina used five home runs to hold off the charging VCU Rams, who battled throughout, scoring four runs in the middle innings to put the pressure on North Carolina, who would eventually pull away in the second half of the game.
Â
LEADING OFF:Â
- The Rams got power from William Bean and Cooper Benzin. Bean hit his second home run of the season, while Benzin smacked a double.
- Will Carlone went 2-for-4 at the plate, knocking in one run.
- Carlone extended his team-high hitting streak to 17 games.
- Benzin extended his hitting streak to seven games.
- Carlone has reached base in 23-straight games.
- VCU got hits at the top of the lineup from both AJ Mathis and Benzin.
- Evan Bert made his collegiate debut on the mound, going 2.2 innings giving up just two hits while striking out three.
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â
- North Carolina got the scoring started in the second inning with back-to-back home runs off VCU's starting pitcher, Zachary Peters.
- Another three runs were put on the board by the Tar Heels in the third, thanks to a three-run home run, the second of the day for Tomas Frick.
- With VCU down 5-0, the Rams got into the game. Leading off the fourth inning was William Bean and he took the first pitch he saw deep to left center for a solo home run to put VCU on the board.
- VCU was not done scoring runs in the inning, adding one more when Ethan Brooks singled to left center to bring home Logan Amiss, who had walked to reach base.
- Another Tar Heel home run in the fourth put the Heels back up 6-2, but the Rams had an answer.
- In the fifth, VCU scored two more runs, getting the closest they would to the Tar Heels with the score at 6-4 at the end of the fifth.
- In that fifth, Carlone knocked in Mathis, who had led off the inning with a walk, and after a pitching change Amiss brought home Benzin on a sacrifice fly.
- Unfortunately for the Rams, the fifth inning would be the last inning that they would score in and over the next four innings the Tar Heels would score four more runs to pull away from the Rams and finish off the 10-4 win.
UP NEXT: The Rams remain in Chapel Hill for one more game against North Carolina, with the Mar. 1 game set for a 4 p.m. first pitch. Like today's game, Wednesday's game will be broadcast on ACCNX.
