VCU LOSES HEARTBREAKER AT LA SALLE

The Short Story: VCU trailed by as many as 11 points in the second half but fought back and had a chance to tie the game with 13 seconds left but missed two 3-point attempts.
 
OPENING TIP: 
  • Timaya Lewis-Eutsey had a game-high 19 points, shooting 8-of-17 from the field and grabbing seven rebounds
  • Mary-Anna Asare had eight points and six rebounds
  • Mykel Parham tied Lewis-Eutsey with a team-high seven boards
  • The Explorers went 5-of-22 from 3-point range with the Rams going 0-of-7
  • VCU went just 9-of-18 from the free throw line while La Salle went 10-of-17
  • La Salle was led by Claire Jacobs who had 19 points
 
HOW IT HAPPENED: 
 
  • VCU and La Salle started the game off slow as the Rams went on an 8-2 run and led by that margin with 4:36 left in the first. The Explorers didn't score their first points until there was 5:12 remaining in the period
  • La Salle then went on a 6-1 run to cut the Rams' lead to 9-7 heading into the second
  • VCU led 15-13 until a 13-3 run by the Explorers gave them a 26-18 lead with 1:23 left before the half. Janika Griffith-Wallace made a layup to get VCU within 26-20 at the break
  • The Rams were down 31-20 in the third quarter before a 15-3 run gave the Rams the lead at 35-34. The run was capped off by a Lewis-Eutsey layup with 2:58 left in the quarter
  • After a VCU basket, La Salle went on 7-0 run to regain the lead at 42-37 early in the fourth
  • The Rams never took the lead in the fourth quarter but never trailed by more than five points. VCU had a chance to tie the game down 54-51 with 23 seconds left but both 3-point attempts just missed the mark
