VCU DROPS ROAD CONTEST AT ST. BONAVENTURE, 68-62

The Short Story: In a game featuring 17 lead changes and 12 ties, St. Bonaventure used a late 7-0 run to pull away from the Rams for the win.  
 
OPENING TIP: 
  • Janika Griffith-Wallace scored a season-high 26 points, going 10-of-15 from the field and 4-of-6 from 3-point range
  • Timaya Lewis-Eutsey added 12 points, three blocks and three rebounds
  • Samantha Robinson had seven points and a team-high six rebounds
  • The Bonnies shot 45.1 percent from the floor and 44.4 percent from 3-point range. They also went a perfect 14-of-14 from the free throw line. The Rams shot 41.1 percent from the field and 38.9 percent from 3-point range
  • St. Bonaventure was led by Nikki Oppenheimer who had 22 points
 
HOW IT HAPPENED: 
 
  • VCU opened the game on a 9-4 run after a Lewis-Eutsey layup
  • The Bonnies responded with a 5-0 run and the two teams went back-and-forth the remainder of the quarter with the score tied 13-13 heading into the second
  • The Rams again gained a slight advantage early in the second quarter with a 7-2 run capped off with another Lewis-Eutsey jumper to make it 20-15 with 7:42 left before half
  • St. Bonaventure answered with a 9-2 run of their own to take its first lead of the game at 24-22 with 4:58 left before half. Neither team was able to pull away and the Bonnies held a slim 30-29 lead at the break
  • Neither team could gain an advantage in the third quarter as it was played within a four-point margin. The Bonnies' Breauna Ware hit a 3-pointer right before the buzzer to take a 51-49 lead
  • Janika Griffith-Wallace got the Rams back out in front after hit a layup to give the Rams a 56-55 lead with 3:11 remaining but the Bonnies used a 7-0 run to go up 62-56 and held off VCU's attempted rally
 
UP NEXT:
VCU plays their final home game against cross-town rival Richmond on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
