VCU DROPS CONTEST TO RHODE ISLAND ON SENIOR DAY

The Short Story: VCU struggled on offense as a big third quarter propelled hot-shooting Rhode Island to victory.
 
OPENING TIP: 
  • Jankia Griffith-Wallace scored a team-high 10 points for VCU on 5-of-11 shooting while adding two steals
  • Senior Mykel Parham grabbed a team-high nine boards along with a career-high three steals
  • Rhode Island shot 45.7 percent from the floor, going 21-of-46 including 6-of-17 from three. VCU shot just 24.1 percent from the floor and went 1-of-12 from 3-point range
  • Rhode Island's Madison Hattix-Covington led all scorers with 13 points
     
HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • VCU and Rhode Island were tied 4-4 early in the game but Rhode Island went on a 10-0 run and led 14-8 at the end of the first
  • The Black and Gold held Rhode Island to 30.8 percent shooting in the second quarter but led by as many as 12. Griffith-Wallace scored six points in the last 3:30 of the second quarter. Rhode Island led 26-16 at halftime
  • Rhode Island went on a 16-4 run in the third quarter starting at the 8:34 mark that lasted just under five minutes. They increased their lead to 42-22 at the end of the period
  • VCU was unable to cut into the deficit in the fourth quarter
