The short story: Freshman outside hitter Juul Knapen erupted for a career-high 16 kills to help push VCU past Rhode Island in a marathon match Friday night.

OPENING VOLLEY
  • Knapen came out of the gate on fire. She blasted nine kills in the first set on 12 swings as the Black and Gold rumbled to a 25-21 win. She also came alive to record three critical kills in the tiebreaker before exiting with an injury. Knapen hit .231 on 39 attempts
  • Sophomore setter Corinna Jones stuffed the box score with 44 assists, 25 digs and seven kills on 16 tries for VCU
  • Senior outside hitter Qairo Bentley added 13 kills, 17 digs, four aces and a pair of blocks for the Black and Gold
  • Claire Wagner and Gabrielle Shilling each provided 11 kills and three blocks to pace Rhode Island
THE DIFFERENCE
  • Knapen spiked a pair of kills to spur a 5-0 VCU burst in the early stages of the tiebreaker that provided the home side with a 6-1 advantage. Rhode Island eventually pulled within 13-12, but a service error set the stage for Bentley to end the night with big right-handed blast on the ensuing play
  • VCU opened the match by hitting .324 in a largely one-sided first-set victory, but Rhode Island did not fold. A pair of Katie Butler kills helped spark Rhody as it closed the second frame on a 7-2 run to stun VCU 25-23. The Black and Gold fell behind 11-4 in the third as Rhode Island rolled to a 25-23 win to take a 2-1 lead in the match
  • VCU held Rhode Island to a .140 hitting percentage and owned a 98-74 dig advantage. The Black and Gold also served up 13 aces
NOTABLE
  • VCU's 98 digs were its most since it registered 103 on Oct. 16, 2010 at George Mason
  • VCU extended its win streak over Rhode Island to 10 straight matches with Friday's victory
