MEN'S SOCCER LOSES CLOSE 1-0 BATTLE TO NEW HAMPSHIRE

Score: New Hampshire 1, VCU 0
Location: Durham, N.H. (Wildcat Stadium)
Records: VCU 0-3-0, New Hampshire 1-2-0

The short story: New Hampshire's goal in the second minute held up despite the Rams' second-half rally.

QUICK FACTS
  • This was VCU's third-straight road game to start the season and each game was in a different state (West Virginia, Ohio, and New Hampshire)
  • New Hampshire outshot VCU 15-6 overall for the game, but only 6-4 in the second half
  • Both teams managed four corner kicks on the night
  • Redshirt sophomore John Ermini played all 90 minutes in net, making two saves
  • Freshman midfielder Moussa Ndiaye led the Rams with two shots

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • New Hampshire struck early in the game, with a goal by Rory O'Driscoll in the second minute
  • The rest of the first half was a defensive battle, with the Rams holding off any threats from New Hampshire's attack
  • The Rams did a better job of possessing the ball in the second half, with redshirt sophomore forward Ethan Manheim and redshirt freshman forward Lance Christmas both getting decent opportunities on net

QUOTING COACH DAVE GIFFARD

"Progress again. For the third game in a row, we see one of the top teams in the college game, and we were able to build out and sustain possession and consistently break the press for the first time this year.  This week, we'll look at some specific details in the final third and how we can create more high percentage chances. Tonight, we gave away a soft goal two minutes in that we never should have. A fair result probably would have been 0-0. Even though we had a few good looks to score, we aren't prepared yet to create enough in the final third to have to score, but we certainly could have gotten one tonight. Next up for our home opener on Saturday night is UNCG, who I'm sure will be in the top 25 when the polls come out this week."

UP NEXT
The Rams will play their first home game of the season at Sports Backers Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 10, when they host the Spartans of UNC Greensboro.  Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
