- In the first minute of the game, Rhode Island's Tali O'Leary took advantage of a corner kick and gave them a 1-0 lead
- VCU had a solid chance in the 41st minute when junior midfielder Aisha Maughan sent a corner kick to graduate student defender Kayla Hodges who just missed the net with a headed effort
- VCU tied the game 1-1 after sophomore Kanna Matsuhisa fired a shot on goal in the 48th minute that produced a rebound for Sarver who found the back of the net
- VCU had one final chance to take the lead in the 89th minute when sophomore defender Greta Kraszula missed with a shot wide of the net
