Location: Richmond, Va. (Siegel Center)

The short story: Senior outside hitter Qairo Bentley led VCU with 20 kills and 20 digs, but it wasn't enough for the Rams to hold off comeback-minded Old Dominion Saturday night.

OPENING VOLLEY
  • Bentley was active throughout the match and logged 67 hitting attempts. She added a pair service aces and a block
  •  Junior middle blocker Jasmine Knight supplied 14 kills for the Black and Gold, while sophomore outside hitter Parker Hartzell added 11 and seven digs
  • Four Rams were credited with at least 13 digs, including junior outside hitter Ana Brangioni (14), sophomore libero Crew Hoffmeier (14) and sophomore setter Taylor Aguano (13)
  • Aguano also set a season-high 47 assists, while junior middle blocker Sarah Stratton kicked in four blocks and six kills for VCU
  • Old Dominion was led by Ashley Peroe and Myah Conway, who supplied 15 kills each
THE DIFFERENCE
  • Old Dominion owned a 13-6 advantage in blocks and outhit the Rams .196 to .141. VCU was also hindered by 15 service errors
  • The Rams struggled to gain traction in the fifth-set tiebreaker. ODU opened up a 4-1 lead as VCU was beset by three hitting errors. The Monarchs pushed the lead to 8-2, sparked by a Peroe kill and a block by Conway, and the Rams were unable to recover. VCU hit -.148 in the tiebreaker
  • The Rams owned a 2-1 lead in the match, but Peroe and Conway combined for three kills on the final seven points of the fourth set to turn a 20-19 ODU lead into a 25-21 Monarchs win
NOTABLE
  • Saturday's match was the second all-time meeting between these two programs. Old Dominion is in its third season since the program's inception
  • Both of VCU's Saturday matches reached five sets, and the Rams logged nearly five hours of match play
  • Stratton, who logged two more service aces against Old Dominion, has recorded 16 in 12 matches this season
