- In the 19th minute, Kanna Matsuhisa's shot attempt forced the first save of the contest
- The Rams threatened again in the 27th minute as Bulatovic's shot hit the crossbar while Bagley's follow up attempt was saved. The teams went into halftime tied 0-0
- VCU's defense kept the game deadlocked at 0-0 as graduate defender Amber DiOrio saved a JMU shot attempt after Horton's pressure forced the Dukes' out wide and the shot was slowed by senior defender Rachael Senyk's deflection
