Â
FIRST PITCH
- The Rams tied their season-long win streak with eight victories in a row. They've also won 16 of their last 19 games, and are 30-10 since March 8.
- The 12-inning battle was VCU's longest game of the season.
- Redshirt junior outfielder AJ Mathis tallied the game-winning RBI and put in a 3-for-6 performance at the plate.
- Sophomore shortstop Connor Hujsak launched his seventh home run of the season, collecting three RBIs.
- Freshman right-hander Nick Frazier earned his second win of the year, throwing a perfect final 2.0 innings of the game and striking out three Hoyas.
- Redshirt senior righty Edwin Serrano struck out six batters, the most in his VCU career, in 3.1 innings of scoreless relief work.
- Redshirt sophomore first baseman Tyler Locklear went 2-for-4 with two walks and two runs, including the game-winning score.
- Freshman second baseman Marcus O'Malley and redshirt sophomore third baseman Ben Nippolt each collected two hits, with O'Malley also drawing a pair of walks, and Nippolt scoring a run.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Georgetown opened the scoring with back-to-back RBI hits in the top of the first, but Hujsak responded immediately in the bottom of the inning with a three-run home run that was hit on a rope over the left field fence, scoring Nippolt and Locklear, who had both singled to lead off the frame.
- A 4-6-3 double play got redshirt junior left-hander Joey Perkins through a scoreless top of the second.
- Redshirt junior Canadian pitchers Evan Chenier and Jaden Griffin combined for four straight scoreless frames from the third through the sixth, including Griffin retiring six straight Hoyas, including a pair of strikeouts.
- A Georgetown RBI double in the top of the seventh tied the game at 3-3.
- Serrano stranded a runner with a punch out to end the seventh, then delivered three straight scoreless frames to keep the game tied into the bottom of the 10th. In the top of the eighth, he hustled to cover first on a 3-4-1 putout, and bookended the inning with strikeouts.
- Locklear led off the bottom of the 12th with a walk, then moved to third on a single to right from redshirt junior right fielder Logan Amiss. With Hujsak intentionally walked to load the bases, Mathis hit a sharp ground ball to first where the force out was made, allowing Locklear to score from third and end the game.
Â
NOTABLE
- Hujsak's seven homers this season match his total from 2021, giving him 14 for his career. The shortstop is second on the team with 46 RBIs this year, and leads the Rams with 15 multi-RBI games.
- Mathis's trio of hits tied a season high.
- Locklear leads VCU with 68 hits, 61 runs, 35 walks, and 20 multi-hit games. The infielder has also reached base in 34 straight contests.
- Nippolt has hits in seven straight games.
- Redshirt sophomore left fielder Cooper Benzin laid down his team-best 11th sacrifice bunt of the season, a total that leads the Atlantic 10 and ranks in the top 10 nationally.
