The short story: Sophomore shortstop
Connor Hujsak drove in three, while three VCU pitchers spun a two-hit shutout Friday in Dayton.
Â
FIRST PITCH
- Hujsak finished the night 2-of-4 at the plate with a homer and helped break the game open in the sixth inning with a two-run double
- Freshman right-hander Chase Hungate (4-4) earned his fourth win with 2.1 scoreless innings of relief for the Black and Gold
- Starting pitcher Tyler Davis scattered two hits over 4.2 scoreless innings for VCU. He stuck out seven and walked a pair
- Rams graduate transfer Nolan Wilson closed things out with two no-hit innings
- Junior outfielder Cooper Benzin recorded a triple for VCUÂ
THE DIFFERENCE
- VCU took command with six runs in the top of the sixth. With one run already home, Hujsak ripped a double to left center to extend the VCU lead to 3-0. Two batters later, freshman catcher Casey Gibbs drew a bases loaded walk, and a Dayton throwing error on the ensuing play pushed two more Rams across the plate for a 6-0 advantage
- In the eighth, Hujsak deposited an 0-1 pitch from Dayton's Anthony Hattrup over the left field wall for his sixth home run of the season
- Just one Dayton baserunner advanced past third base all nightÂ
NOTABLE
- Hujsak is second on the team in both homers (6) and RBIs (33)
- The shutout is VCU's second of the 2022 season
