The short story:Â Richmond's Brock Weirather threw a complete game shutout as the Spiders took the first game of a three-game conference set Friday afternoon.

- VCU outhit the Spiders 8-7
- Sophomore left-hander Campbell Ellis started on the mound for the Rams, throwing 4.0 scoreless and hitless innings, striking out three batters and walking just one.
- Redshirt junior right fielder Logan Amiss went 3-for-4 with a double.
- Ben Nippolt, Tyler Locklear, Connor Hujsak, Devan Barnett, and Jesse Robinson each collected a hit.
- Weirather scattered eight hits across nine scoreless innings and struck out eight.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- VCU had five hits through the first three innings, but left three runners on base.
- The Spiders did not have a hit until the sixth inning, when they strung five hits together in addition to a VCU error to score five runs.
- Solo home runs in the seventh and eighth innings extended the Richmond lead to 7-0.
