VCU FALLS TO DAYTON IN A-10 SEMIFINALS

Final Score:  Dayton 59, VCU 48

The Short Story: VCU trailed Dayton by as many as 13 points but closed the deficit to 42-36 with 8:21 left in the contest. The Flyers immediately answered VCU's run with an 8-2 run of their own to fend off the Rams.
 
OPENING TIP:
  • Taya Robinson scored a team-high 25 points, one shy of her career-high, and moved into third place all-time at VCU in career points. Robinson also had seven rebounds, three steals and three assists
  • Sarah Te-Biasu was the only other Ram in double figures scoring 10 points along with two assists
  • VCU shot just 31.1 percent from the floor and 23.8 percent from 3-point range while the Flyers shot 35.1 percent overall and 41.2 percent from deep
  • Dayton was led by Erin Whalen who had 20 points and five rebounds

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Dayton started the game on an 12-2 run as VCU's offense struggled early. The Rams and Flyers traded baskets for the remainder of the quarter and VCU trailed 15-7 after the first
  • The Flyers pushed their lead to 22-9 with 7:06 left before halftime but back-to-back baskets from Robinson and Hattix-Covington trimmed the deficit to 22-14
  • The Flyers took a 30-19 lead into halftime, shooting 40 percent from the floor while the Rams shot just 29 percent. Robinson scored a team-high 11 points in the first half
  • VCU went on a 7-2 run to start the third quarter, capped off by a Robinson steal and a layup on the other end to make it 32-26 with 7:21 left
  • Dayton answered with a 7-0 run to push its lead back to 39-26 with 4:17 remaining in the third
  • A Sarah Te-Biasu 3-pointer to cap off a 10-3 run brought VCU back within 42-36 with 8:21 remaining
  • Dayton answered with an 8-2 run to push their lead to 50-38. VCU was unable to get closer than a seven point deficit for the remainder of the contest
 
UP NEXT:
VCU will await its possible postseason selection for the WNIT. The WNIT selection will take place on Sunday, March 13.
