Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After sophomore lefty Campbell Ellis struck out five batters through three scoreless frames to start the game, Easton Brenner walked and stole second, then scored on Pete Ciuffreda's RBI single. Ciuffreda doubled Lafayette's lead on Michael Zarrillo's RBI single after stealing second and advancing to third on a VCU throwing error.
- Brenner pushed Lafayette's lead to 3-0 in the sixth, scoring as Kyle Chmielewski reached on a VCU fielding error.
- Mathis entered as a defensive substitute in the top of the ninth, then got the VCU rally started in the bottom of the frame by putting a charge into a triple to right center after a nine-pitch at-bat, but the Rams were unable to bring him home.
