Records:Â VCU 1-2, Wake Forest 3-0
Â
The short story:Â VCU took a 4-2 lead after a big fifth inning, but the Demon Deacons scored four unanswered runs to hand the Rams a non-conference loss.Â
Â
FIRST PITCH
- Redshirt junior right fielder Logan Amiss collected a hit, a run, and an RBI.
- Redshirt juniors Michael Haydak and AJ Mathis, and redshirt sophomore Cooper Benzin each drove in a run for the Rams.
- Wake Forest's Adam Cecere hit two home runs to lead the Demon Deacon offense.
- Teddy McGraw earned the win for Wake after 6.0 innings of work, despite conceding four VCU runs. Jaden Griffin was handed the loss, while Eric Adler notched the save.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- VCU flashed the leather in the early innings, with redshirt sophomore third baseman Tyler Locklear snagging a lineout in the first, and Connor Hujsak, Marcus O'Malley and Haydak turning an inning-ending double play in the second.
- After Wake Forest hit back-to-back homers to lead off the bottom of the third, redshirt junior reliever Evan Chenier threw three innings, allowing just one run and striking out three to keep Wake Forest at bay.
- Amiss led off the fourth with a walk, moved to second on a Locklear groundout, hustled to third on a passed ball, then scored on Haydak's RBI groundout to cut the lead to 2-1.
- The Rams executed offensively in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. After back-to-back singles from graduate catcher Jacob Selden and Hujsak, O'Malley squared around to bunt, but managed to draw a walk to load the bases. Benzin then laid down a bunt single to plate Selden, Mathis hit a sac fly to right, and Amiss hit an RBI single, all in consecutive at-bats.
- Wake Forest responded with a sac fly in the bottom of the fifth, then Cecere hit homers in the sixth and eighth innings to secure the lead for good.
Â
NOTABLE
- Selden's leadoff single in the fifth was his first base hit as a Ram.
- Freshman left-hander Cade Dressler made his collegiate debut by striking out both batters he faced in the eighth inning.
