The short story: The Rams went toe-to-toe with North Carolina, but a goal in the 82
nd minute was enough to get the Tar Heels the win. Â
Â
QUICK FACTS
- Redshirt sophomore John Ermini had a busy evening in net, making four key saves to keep the match close.
- 18 different players saw game action for the Rams against the Tar Heels.
- This marked the Rams' final non-conference game of the regular season. All told, out of the team's eight non-conference games, three were against teams currently ranked in the national polls (Marshall, Akron, and UNC Greensboro).
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Rams did a great job of possessing the ball in the early parts of the match as the two teams settled into the flow of the game.
- Late in the first half, North Carolina sprayed the Black and Gold's net with shots, but Ermini and the defense held strong for a scoreless tie at the half.
- The second half saw more stout play in the defensive third by the Rams, but the Tar Heels eventually broke through with a header goal by Akeim Clarke off of an assist by Milo Garvanian.
- Redshirt sophomore midfielder Ethan Manheim got an opportunity to tie the match in the waning moments, but North Carolina goalkeeper Andrew Cordes stopped his shot on goal.

HEAR FROM HEAD COACH DAVE GIFFARD
Â
"We got better again tonight. The first 25-30 minutes was probably our best period of control of a top game so far this year. In the end, we had to make subs to get more guys ready for the upcoming games in the league Saturday, Wednesday, and next Saturday. We conceded a goal late that the guys will learn from and get prepared for the stretch run in the A-10. We gave quite a lot to the game and probably deserved a point, but didn't do enough to get the result. As I've said for the last several weeks, this is a special group of players, and each game we see more and more of their potential and what is coming. Back to work and back to preparations for Dayton on Saturday."
