The short story:Â A second-half attacking push by the Rams was not enough to overcome two first-half goals from the Pirates.
Â
QUICK FACTS
- This was VCU's first road loss of the season, after having won its first three matches away from home. Sunday was also the Rams' third straight match played on the road.
- After ECU out-shot VCU by a 5-1 margin in the first half, shots were even at six apiece in the second half.
- Redshirt senior goalkeeper Grace Young made four saves in the match.
- Redshirt senior forward Samantha Jerabek and senior center back Amber DiOrio each registered two shots, including a shot on goal.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Young snuffed out a dangerous Pirates chance in the ninth minute, coming off her line to dive on a ball from over the top before ECU could get a shot off. Six minutes later, she dove low to her left to stop a shot from just inside the box.
- Jerabek had the Rams' best scoring chance of the first half, ripping a tight-angle shot in the 16th minute to force a save at the near post.
- The Pirates opened the scoring in the 32nd minute through Kim Sanford, who headed home Morgan Dewey's corner kick.
- ECU doubled its lead 11 seconds before halftime with Peyton Godbey finishing a cross from Lindsey Aiken.
- VCU came out of the halftime break with renewed energy, and sophomore forward Aisha Maughan rattled the crossbar with a shot from just inside the box in the 47th minute.
- In the 70th minute, as ECU's Annabelle Abbott attacked down the right flank, senior center back Lana Golob timed a slide tackle perfectly to poke away the ball without committing a foul. The tackle was one of several attack-stopping plays Golob made throughout the match.
- Jerabek had a good look at goal in the 76th minute, but her shot sailed just high of the net.
- DiOrio tested Pirates goalkeeper Maeve English in the 90th minute with a long-range effort that English was forced to punch over the bar.
