The short story: Rhode Island scored less than a minute into the second overtime to defeat a 10-man VCU in the first Atlantic 10 match of the season.

QUICK FACTS
  • Freshman midfielder Damian Gallegos notched his second goal of the season in his third career start with an assist from sophomore midfielder Celio Pompeu.
  • Senior goalkeeper Mario Sequeira made nine saves in the match.
  • Pompeu received his second yellow card of the night in the 79th minute, forcing VCU to play down a man for the remainder of the match.
  • URI held a slim 20-19 advantage in total shots, and an 11-5 edge in shots on goal. VCU did not have a corner kick in the match, while URI had three.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • While both teams held spells of possession in the first half, VCU had the majority of the ball and the more dangerous scoring chances in the opening period.
  • Sequeira leaped to comfortably contain the first shot on goal of the match in the 21st minute.
  • In the 28th minute, Pompeu skillfully created space for himself in the box, but his shot was blocked away.
  • The best opportunity of the half came a minute later, as senior midfielder Oquin Robinson collected a loose ball in the midfield, charged into the box and took a touch around a defender, and then poked a shot on goal that was saved.
  • Right before the halftime whistle, Pompeu cut in on his right foot and rifled a shot just wide of the near post.
  • Sequeira was alert early in the second half, diving with steady hands twice in the opening minutes of the period to block shots away.
  • Redshirt freshman forward Ethan Manheim flicked a header just to the right of the goal in the 53rd minute after play between Gallegos and Pierre Fiorre Mane along the right wing resulted in a cross.
  • Rhody got on the board first in the 63rd minute when Patrick Agyemang brought down Cian Purcell's corner kick, and Rafa Villanueva put the ball in the net on the half-volley.
  • VCU equalized in the 78th, as Pompeu worked to the end line and played a cross that deflected off a URI defender. Gallegos pounced on the loose ball, turning and firing a shot into the top of the net.
  • Moments after the goal, Pompeu was late on a slide tackle and got ejected after receiving his second yellow card of the match. VCU played with 10 men for the rest of the night.
  • Freshman midfielder Philip Klomp took a long-range shot in the 88th minute, but his effort floated high.
  • After a scoreless first overtime period, URI scored 42 seconds into the second overtime through Isak Oystese, whose shot found the lower right corner.

QUOTING HEAD COACH DAVE GIFFARD
"A very frustrating way to start the league. I was hoping we were beyond these kinds of performances after the egg we laid at FIU a few weeks back, but we obviously aren't. We played slowly and without aggressive movements off the ball. We also defended poorly and to be honest, it looked like a carbon copy of FIU. We take a long drive home to think about it and then get back to work again to prepare for ODU with a quick turnaround."
