FIRST PITCH
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior first baseman Steven Carpenter, playing in his 205th career game, led the game off with a walk, then moved to third on Locklear's single and a throwing error. Hibbits sent a first-pitch single to right center to plate Carpenter and open the scoring.
- Henson followed Hibbits with a three-run blast to left, his second homer of the Regional, to give VCU a 4-0 lead before an out was recorded in the game.
- After Campbell scored five runs in the third to take the lead, Vay tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the fourth by slashing an RBI double the opposite way to score Locklear.
- The Camels retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI groundout and a sac fly, pulling ahead 7-5.
- VCU once again responded immediately, with Schroeder sending a big fly over the wall in center field for the second straight game, tying the game at 7-7.
- After Vay doubled to right center and sophomore second baseman Michael Haydak walked, Hujsak crushed a no-doubt home run to left to give VCU a 10-7 lead. All five runs in the sixth inning came with two outs.
- With the VCU bullpen stretched thin, Campbell scored 12 unanswered runs over the next three frames to pull away from the Rams.
