Â
FIRST PITCH
- Junior catcher Hunter Vay hit two home runs, both to the opposite field, for a total of four runs and four RBIs on a 3-for-5 night.
- Junior center fielder Hogan Brown collected a career- and game-high six RBIs, including a grand slam to straightaway center in the fifth.
- Junior designated hitter Liam Hibbits and senior left fielder Brandon Henson smoked back-to-back home runs in the fourth.
- Every Rams starter scored at least one run in the contest.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After the Camels opened the scoring with an RBI double in the second, VCU responded with seven runs in the bottom of the inning. Vay put the Rams on top with a two-run shot to left, followed by run-scoring singles from Brown and freshman third baseman Tyler Locklear. Senior first baseman Steven Carpenter scored on a wild pitch before junior right fielder Jack Schroeder capped the inning with an RBI single.
- Campbell got one back in the third, but the Rams put up another crooked number in the fourth. Hibbits led off the frame with a no-doubt home run to the concourse in right field, then Henson immediately followed him with a big fly to left.
- Schroeder and Vay both scored on wild pitches to push the VCU advantage to 11-2 after four innings.
- VCU scored six runs in the fifth, with RBI singles from sophomore second baseman Michael Haydak and Locklear bookending Brown's grand slam.
- Vay put an exclamation point on the Rams' offensive night in the sixth, going the other way for a two-run homer.
- Graduate right-hander Bradford Webb put in a solid start on the mound, striking out five and allowing just two runs in 4.2 innings.
- Freshman lefty Campbell Ellis improved to 6-1 on the season, allowing one earned run across three innings of relief. Ellis entered the game in the sixth with the bases loaded and no outs, and escaped the jam without allowing a run to score.
Â
NOTABLE
- VCU extended its program-record winning streak to 22 games, the longest active streak in the nation.
- Vay, the Atlantic 10 Championship Most Outstanding Player, has hit five home runs in the past four games and now has nine dingers on the season.
- This is the seventh time this season that a VCU player has had two homers in the same game.
