The short story: VCU scored seven unanswered runs in the final three innings to complete a dramatic comeback and sweep the season series against Virginia.
FIRST PITCH
- Junior designated hitter Liam Hibbits registered a game-high three RBIs, all from a go-ahead bases-clearing double in the top of the ninth.
- Junior reliever Edwin Serrano earned his third win of the season, striking out four Cavaliers and allowing just one run across three full innings.
- Both Tyler Locklear and Hunter Vay went 2-for-4 with a walk, while Locklear scored the winning run.
- Junior right fielder Jack Schroeder scored from both of his at-bats, reaching on an error and collecting a double.
- Freshman lefty Tyler Davis threw a scoreless ninth inning to notch his fifth save of the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cavaliers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning, extending their advantage to 5-0 by the end of the sixth.
- The Rams registered hits in five of the first six frames, but failed to bring a run home.
- Freshman shortstop Connor Hujsak cut the lead to 5-2 in the top of the seventh with a two-run home run deep into the left field stands, scoring Schroeder who had reached on an error.
- Junior center fielder Hogan Brown followed Hujsak's big fly with a double down the right field line, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. A hard-hit RBI groundout from Locklear scored Brown and cut the deficit to 5-3.
- Serrano kept the Rams within striking distance with two straight 1-2-3 innings that included three strikeouts.
- Schroeder led off the ninth with a double to right, then moved to third on a Brown groundout. With two outs, Michael Haydak was hit by a pitch, then took second on a wild pitch before Locklear walked to load the bases.
- Senior left fielder Brandon Henson drew a bases loaded walk that brought VCU to within a run.
- Hibbits smoked a double to right center that cleared the bases and gave the Rams a 7-5 lead that they did not relinquish.
NOTABLE
- VCU has won 12 straight games, the second-longest active streak in Division I and the longest Rams win streak since 2018.
- The Rams also beat Virginia, 5-3, on April 20 at The Diamond.
- Hujsak's two-run shot was his fifth homer of the season and third in the last six games.
- VCU is 17-5 against teams from the state of Virginia this season.
