VCU CLOSES REGULAR SEASON WITH 10-1 WIN OVER JAMES MADISON

Score: VCU 10, James Madison 1
Location: Harrisonburg, Va. (Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park)
Records: VCU 34-14, James Madison 11-17

The short story: Home runs from Liam Hibbits and Connor Hujsak, and a lights-out performance from VCU's bullpen closed the regular season with a win for the Rams.

FIRST PITCH
  • Hibbits went 2-for-4, scored two runs, and upped his season RBI total to 55 with a three-run homer in the fifth.
  • Hujsak also went 2-for-4, collecting a walk, a double, three runs scored, and a three-run blast of his own in the ninth.
  • Starter Bradford Webb was locked in, scattering two hits and striking out three batters in three scoreless innings. It only took 31 pitches for Webb to get through three frames, 25 of which were strikes.
  • Andrew WardMaddison FurmanDanny Watson, and Edwin Serrano allowed a singular run on three hits across six combined innings, including a run of four straight 1-2-3 innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Senior first baseman Steven Carpenter singled the first pitch of the game through the left side, then advanced to third on Tyler Locklear's infield single and a throwing error. As Locklear got caught stealing second, Carpenter sprinted home for the first run of the game.
  • After the Dukes tied the game on a safety squeeze in the bottom of the fourth, VCU responded immediately with a crooked number in the top of the fifth. After Hujsak and Locklear walked, the latter intentionally, Hibbits crushed a ball over the right field fence for his third homer of the year, giving the Rams a 4-1 advantage.
  • Ward threw a perfect fifth, collecting his third and fourth strikeouts of the day, and putting himself in position for his third win of the year.
  • Hujsak doubled to lead off the seventh, advanced to third on Hogan Brown's groundout, then scored on Carpenter's sacrifice fly to push the VCU lead to 5-1.
  • The Rams put the game out of reach with five runs in the top of the ninth, highlighted by Hujsak's three-run homer to deep left center.

NOTABLE
  • VCU won its 18th straight game, the longest active win streak in Division I and tied for the longest in program history.
  • The Rams scored double-digit runs for the third straight game and the fifth time in six games.
