BASEBALL SWEEPS SATURDAY DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST GEORGE MASON

Game 1: VCU 3, George Mason 1
Game 2: VCU 8, George Mason 1
Location: Richmond, Va. (The Diamond)
Records: VCU 26-14 (8-3 Atlantic 10), George Mason 9-21 (2-9)

The short story: VCU pitching limited George Mason to just two runs across 14 innings, as the Rams' bats got timely hits to sweep the A-10 doubleheader.

GAME ONE
First Pitch
  • Freshman shortstop Connor Hujsak accounted for all three VCU RBIs in the first game, going 1-for-3 with a home run.
  • Junior catcher Hunter Vay went 1-for-2 with a double, a walk, and a pair of runs scored.
  • Sophomore starter Danny Watson turned in the longest outing of his career, striking out four Patriots in 4.2 scoreless innings, and picking up his second win of the season.
  • Sophomore right hander Evan Chenier recorded his team-leading fifth save of the year, throwing 2.1 innings of relief and allowing just a single run.

The Difference
  • After Vay walked in the second inning, Hujsak fouled off four pitches in a nine-pitch at-bat, then launched a home run to left to put the Rams up 2-0.
  • Watson pitched efficiently, working through the first four frames in just 39 pitches.
  • With the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the fifth, Chenier relieved Watson and struck out George Mason's Jordan Smith swinging to escape the jam.
  • The Patriots cut the lead to 2-1 on a Scott Morgan solo homer in the sixth, but the Rams responded in the bottom of the frame. Vay doubled on a towering fly ball down the left field line, then reached third on a Cooper Benzin sacrifice bunt. Hujsak brought Vay home on a sacrifice fly to deep center, giving VCU all the insurance it needed.

GAME TWO
First Pitch
  • Freshman third baseman Tyler Locklear paced the Rams offense in the second game, going 2-for-4 with a double, three RBIs, and a pair of runs.
  • Sophomore second baseman Michael Haydak scored a trio of runs in a 2-for-3 game in addition to a walk.
  • Senior left fielder Brandon Henson went 2-for-3, drove in a pair of runs, and drew a walk.
  • Freshman lefty Campbell Ellis earned his fourth win of the year, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings of relief and striking out three.
  • Right-handed reliever Edwin Serrano closed out the game with two perfect innings, retiring all six batters he faced on just 15 pitches.

The Difference
  • George Mason opened the second game with a first-inning run, but the Rams responded immediately. After Haydak led off with a bloop single, he went on the pitch and scored as Henson smacked a double down the left field line.
  • Ellis entered the game in the top of the third, inheriting a bases-loaded, one-out jam, and escaped the frame unscathed after inducing a 1-2-3 double play.
  • The Georgetown, Ontario, product then struck out the side in the fourth.
  • VCU broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs on five singles to take a 5-1 lead.
  • Locklear added insurance in the sixth, roping a two-run double off the wall in left center. He came home to score two batters later when Liam Hibbits singled through the right side.

NOTABLE

  • The Rams improved to 16-3 at The Diamond this season.
