The short story: Senior first baseman Steven Carpenter homered and drove in five runs as VCU opened up the floodgates on Georgetown Wednesday.

FIRST PITCH
  • Carpenter homered, doubled, walked twice and scored three times to go with his five RBIs. Officially, he was 2-for-3 at the plate to raise his batting average this season to .338
  • VCU freshman third baseman Tyler Locklear launched his team-high 13th home run of the season and finished his day 2-for-3. He also walked twice and scored three times
  • Junior outfielder Jack Schroeder and freshman catcher Nic Ericsson also blasted solo home runs for VCU
  • Sophomore Danny Watson started and threw three scoreless frames for the Black and Gold. He struck out five and did not walk a batter
THE DIFFERENCE
  • VCU touched up Hoya pitching for 14 hits, including four home runs. The Rams totaled seven extra base hits on the evening
  • Six VCU pitchers combined to strike out a season-high 17 Georgetown batters
  • The Rams struck early. Locklear walked with one out in the top of the first inning and Carpenter hammered the first pitch he saw from Georgetown starter Jack Weeks over the left centerfield wall for a 2-0 VCU lead. In the fourth, Carpenter pushed VCU's lead to 5-0 with a two-run double to the left centerfield gap
  • VCU scored in seven of nine innings Wednesday
NOTABLE
  • Locklear entered the day second nationally in home runs behind South Carolina's Wes Clarke (15)
  • Carpenter's homer was his first of the season
  • The Rams have hit 31 homers in 26 games in 2021. Fourteen Rams have hit at least one home run this season
  • Both of Ericsson's career hits, including a double last season, have come against Georgetown
