MANHEIM, GASSANT POWER RAMS TO VICTORY

Final Score: VCU 2, George Mason 0
Location: Fairfax, Va.
Records: VCU 4-3-2 (3-2-1 A-10), George Mason 0-6-3 (0-3-3 A-10)

The Short Story: VCU's Ethan Manheim once again provided a spark for the Rams when they needed it most with his opening goal that proved to be the winner in the team's 2-0 win over George Mason on Saturday.

QUICK FACTS:

  • Manheim scored his second career goal while leading the team with three total shots
  • Wladimir Gassant scored the first goal of his VCU career off the bench
  • The Rams were outshot 10-9 but placed four shots on target compared to George Mason's 2
  • VCU earned seven corner kicks
  • The Rams possessed the ball for 57 percent of the match

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  •  The Rams enjoyed the majority of possession throughout the match but were unable to find the back of the net at the end of the first 45 minutes of play.
  • At the 60th minute mark, redshirt-freshman John Ermini was called upon to replace Mario Sequeira after the goalkeeper had sustained an injury. Ermini played the final 30 minutes and held on to preserve the clean sheet.
  • In the 83rd minute of play, VCU's Simon Fitch made a sliding tackle to gain possession of the ball deep in the Rams defensive half. VCU worked the ball up to Gassant who found the run of WillIam Hitchcock on the right wing.
  • It was Hitchcock who sent in a low, curling cross that found the foot of Manheim who's sliding effort netted the opening goal.
  • In the 84th minute Gassant iced the match with a powerful volley into the top corner of goal.
