VCU FALLS TO INDIANA IN NCAA FIRST ROUND

The Short Story: VCU's defense held Indiana's offense, one of the top 25 scoring offenses in the country, in check for a large portion of the game but the Rams were unable to find a rhythm offensively in the loss.
 
OPENING TIP: 
  • VCU played in its second NCAA Tournament all-time and first since 2009
  • Chloe Bloom and Samantha Robinson tied for the team-high with eight points each while also adding five rebounds
  • Tera Reed grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and scored three points
  • Sarah Te-Biasu had seven points, four steals and four assists
  • VCU shot just 22.8 percent from the floor for the contest while Indiana shot 44.4 percent from the field
  • The Rams and Hoosiers were tied 39-39 in rebounds but Indiana held a 19-7 advantage in points off turnovers
  • The Hoosiers were led by Grace Berger who had 20 points and eight rebounds
HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • Indiana started the game on a 9-2 run that spanned the first 2:49 of the contest before VCU called timeout
  • Taya Robinson answered with a 3-pointer on the next possession followed by a Bloom jumper to cut the Indiana lead to just 9-7 with 5:32 left in the quarter
  • The Hoosiers outscored VCU 7-4 for the remainder of the quarter to lead 16-11 after the first
  • The Rams went on a 6-0 run and held Indiana scoreless for the first 5:04 of the second quarter. Chloe Bloom's putback layup gave VCU the lead at 17-16 to cap off the run
  • VCU was unable to score for the remainder of the half as Indiana went on a 5-0 run of their own and led 22-17 at halftime
  • The Hoosiers shot 53.8 percent from the field in the third quarter while VCU shot 41.7 percent, outscoring the Black and Gold 19-12 and taking a 41-29 lead into the final 10 minutes
  • Indiana outscored VCU 22-3 in the final quarter
