The short story: Fourth-seeded Fordham scored under a minute into the second overtime period to hand fifth-seeded VCU a heartbreaking loss in the Atlantic 10 quarterfinals.

QUICK HITS
  • Redshirt sophomore defender Jared Valdes scored his first collegiate goal to tie the match.
  • Freshman midfielder Damian Gallegos registered an assist on the Valdes goal, his fourth helper of the season. He ranks second on the Rams in both assists (4) and points (12) this year.
  • This is VCU's seventh match this season to require overtime.
  • Fordham held 55% of the possession in the match, and outshot VCU by a 21-7 margin.
  • Senior attacker Jared Greene led VCU with four total shots.
  • VCU has received votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll for 10 straight weeks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Greene had the first quality chance of the night in the 14th minute, collecting a loose ball in the box with Fordham goalkeeper Nick Buchholz off his line, and taking a shot on goal that was cleared away by a Fordham defender.
  • Fordham got on the board first in the 26th minute when a cross deflected off a VCU defender and into the net.
  • With Buchholz off his line again in the 31st minute, graduate forward Pablo Varela Fraga headed the ball centrally to Greene, whose first-time shot on the half volley sailed wide of the goal.
  • Senior goalkeeper Mario Sequeira saved a diving header in the 36th minute.
  • VCU equalized shortly after halftime in the 49th minute. Sophomore winger Celio Pompeu served a corner kick that was headed out to the top of the box. Freshman midfielder Philip Klomp touched the ball to Gallegos, who ripped a shot that Valdes deflected past Buchholz and inside the far post.
  • Gallegos tested the keeper again in the 73rd minute, taking a long-range shot that forced a save at the near post.
  • Greene fired a shot on goal in the 82nd minute that produced a rebound that had to be cleared away by the Fordham back line.
  • Florian Deletioglu scored in the 101st minute, finishing a cross from Max Rogers, who had been set up by Luke McNamara.

QUOTING HEAD COACH DAVE GIFFARD
"The result tonight was a very difficult pill to swallow. I was super proud of the guys for stepping in with the guys that we had out tonight, and battling in very difficult conditions against a tough and hungry Fordham team who is very good at playing on that surface. It's unfortunate that we weren't able to find a way to get the result. Now we have to hope that our body of work gives us an opportunity to keep playing. So we wait."
