VCU CLAIMS A-10 REGULAR SEASON TITLE WITH 2-1 WIN AT DAVIDSON

Location: Davidson, N.C. (Alumni Soccer Stadium)
Records: RV/#25 VCU 13-2-0 (9-0-0 Atlantic 10), Davidson 4-10-3 (0-7-2 A-10)

The short story: VCU clinched the Atlantic 10 regular season championship with a comeback victory over the Wildcats, fueled by goals from fifth-year seniors Emma Kershner and Samantha Jerabek.

QUICK FACTS
  • This is VCU's first A-10 regular season title.
  • The Rams have won nine straight matches, tying the program record for the longest win streak, when the 2005 team also won nine straight.
  • VCU has also clinched the No. 1 seed in the Atlantic 10 tournament, which starts with the quarterfinal round on either Oct. 30 or 31.
  • Jerabek set the program record for career games played, appearing in her 86th match wearing the black and gold.
  • Jerabek's 61st minute strike was her team-leading sixth goal of the season, and team-high third game-winner; she also leads the Rams with 17 points on the year. She now has 30 goals and 78 points for her career, marks that both rank third all-time at VCU. Her eight career game-winning goals are tied for second-most in VCU history.
  • Kershner's game-tying penalty conversion in the 55th minute was her fifth goal of the season, tying a career-high. She now has 17 goals and 48 points for her career.
  • Redshirt senior forward Lyndsey Gutzmer provided the assist on Jerabek's goal, her team- and career-high sixth helper of the season. The Henrico native now has 12 career assists.
  • While Davidson opened the scoring in the 53rd minute, the Rams held possession for the majority of the match and tallied a commanding 12-5 advantage in shots.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gutzmer had the first chance of the match in the 12th minute, letting a ball run across her body, then blasting a right-footed shot just over the bar.
  • Senior defender Emily Charen played a dangerous cross into the six-yard box in the 17th minute that Jerabek nearly got a head to.
  • Kershner had a free header at the back post in the 28th minute that sailed just wide of the goal.
  • Junior midfielder Anna Bagley cut sharply inside a Wildcat defender in the 37th minute, opening space to rip a shot from just outside the box that forced a save.
  • Freshman forward Kanna Matsuhisa turned on a cross from Jerabek in the 42nd minute, forcing a diving save.
  • Aleia Gisolfi-McCready opened the scoring for Davidson in the 53rd, floating a header into the side-netting from a Cecie Bassett cross.
  • Moments later, Jerabek got to the end line behind the Wildcats' defenders, and earned a penalty after getting shouldered off the ball. Kershner stepped up to the spot and coolly finished down the center as Davidson goalkeeper Emily Smith dove to her right.
  • The Rams quickly took the lead six minutes later. Gutzmer drove down the right wing and delivered a cross into the middle of the box. Jerabek took two controlling touches after a bounce, rooting a Davidson defender flat-footed, then fired a powerful strike past Smith into the far corner.
  • Jerabek nearly scored again in the 68th minute, winning a tackle in the attacking third and poking a shot past Smith that rolled wide of the goal.
