VCU BATTLES PAST LA SALLE IN 67-61 ROAD WIN

The Short Story: In a game with 13 lead changes and 10 ties, VCU and La Salle were deadlocked at 59-59 with 3:16 remaining before Madison Hattix-Covington jumped in front of a pass for a steal and made two free throws to start a 5-0 VCU run and seal the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • VCU fell behind 11-4 with 7:08 left in the first quarter before an 8-2 run got the Rams with 13-12. The teams kept pace with each other as La Salle clung to an 18-17 lead heading into the second quarter.
  • There were seven lead changes and three ties in the second quarter alone as the teams were deadlocked at 31-31 going into halftime.
  • The third quarter was almost identical to the second as the game continued to go back-and-forth with six lead changes during the quarter. The Rams scored five of the final seven points in the quarter to lead 46-43 heading to the final 10 minutes.
  • The Rams led by as many as seven points on two occasions early in the fourth quarter but the Explorers battled back with a 10-3 run to tie the game at 59-59.
  • VCU's defense held the Explorers without a point from 3:15 remaining until there were 22 seconds left and outscored them 5-0 during that stretch to go up 64-59.
