The Short Story: Trailing by as many as 17 points, VCU mounted a furious rally and cut the deficit to just 56-54 with 3:25 remaining. The Flyers were able to score their final 16 points at the free throw line to hold off the Rams in the final 2:55.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- VCU trailed 7-4 with 6:15 left in the first quarter before Dayton went on a 14-4 run to lead 21-8 heading into the second quarter.
- The Rams went on a 6-2 run to start the second quarter after back-to-back baskets from Hammond and trailed 23-14.
- The Flyers pulled away to make it 35-19 before VCU scored the final four points to cut the deficit to 35-23 at the half.
- VCU and Dayton had a back-and-forth third quarter as the Rams outscored the Flyers 16-13 in the quarter to cut the deficit to 48-39 heading into the final 10 minutes.
- VCU went on a 15-8 run to start the fourth quarter and Hammond's putback layup got the Rams within 56-54 with 3:25 remaining.
- The Rams continued to fight but got no closer the remainder of the game.
