RAMS STIFLE MONARCHS IN 62-49 WIN

The Short Story: The Rams limited ODU to shoot just 27 percent and used a dominant fourth quarter to beat in-state rival Old Dominion on Sunday afternoon.

QUICK FACTS 

  • Sydnei Archie had 15 points, including going a perfect 3-of-3 from behind the arc, and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
  • Danielle Hammond delivered a strong performance with six points, seven rebounds and four blocks.
  • Tera Reed scored a team-high 17 points while shooting 6-of-11 from the floor. She added three rebounds and two steals.
  • Taya Robinson was the third VCU player in double figures with 10 points.
  • The Monarchs, who came into Sunday's game averaging 64.3 points per game, were held to a 27 percent overall and 23.1 percent from three. In addition, VCU turned them over 18 times.
  • VCU knocked down 47 percent of its shots from the field, including 43 percent from beyond the arc and 74 percent at the free throw line.
  • Old Dominion stayed within striking distance for much of the game, but VCU never trailed in the contest. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • After a slow start from both teams, the Rams finally got going and ended the first quarter on a 10-5 run to go up 15-8.
  • ODU chipped away at VCU's lead in the second quarter made it a two-point game heading into halftime with the Rams leading 26-24 at the break.
  • VCU started the second half with a 9-4 run but the Monarchs bounced back with an 8-to-2 run of their own that kept things close.
  • It was all VCU in the fourth quarter, however, as the Rams exploded for a 16-2 run that put them in control.
  • VCU made four of its final five shot attempts to end the game.

The Rams hit the road to Murfreesboro, Tenn. to take on Middle Tennessee State in a 7:30 p.m. EST contest on Wednesday, Dec. 18.
