The short story: VCU men's tennis extended its season-opening win streak to five matches with a 4-2 triumph over Penn on Sunday afternoon.
OPENING SERVE
- The Rams jumped out to a 1-0 lead after securing the doubles point. Sophomore Javier Amantegui and junior Arvid Noren defeated RJ Sands and Nicholai Westergaard 6-4 at No. 2 doubles, before freshman duo Inigo Torre Martin and Timo Zgraggen took down Aleks Huryn and Max Cancilla 7-5 to clinch the point.
- Noren breezed through his No. 3 singles match against Dmitry Shatalin, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-3.
- The Quakers tied the match at 2-2 with wins at No. 4 and No. 1 singles.
- Amantegui was leading his No. 2 singles match in the third set when his opponent, Josh Pompan, pulled out due to illness.
- Zgraggen clinched the win for the Rams, defeating Huryn in a third-set tiebreak at No. 5 singles.
