RAMS PULL AWAY IN SECOND HALF, COAST PAST COLONIALS 87-63

The short story: Senior forward Justin Tillman and sophomore guard De'Riante Jenkins each poured in 18 points to lift VCU to a comfortable 87-63 victory Saturday afternoon in Richmond.

OPENING TIP

  • Tillman knocked down 7-of-11 from the field and 4-of-4 at the line, while Jenkins buried 4-of-6 from beyond the 3-point arc in the contest. Tillman added eight rebounds.
  • Senior guard Johnny Williams added 14 points and four assists, while freshman forward Marcus Santos-Silva provided 11 points and five rebounds off the bench.
  • Freshman forward Sean Mobley, making his first career start, handed out a career-high eight of VCU's 20 assists.
  • Yuta Watanabe paced the Colonials with 19 points.

THE DIFFERENCE

  • VCU used stout second half defense to turn a four-point halftime lead into a comfortable win. George Washington, which shot 14-of-20 from the field in the first half, was just 8-of-29 from the floor in the second, including 2-of-11 from three.
  • Williams help spark an extended 19-6 VCU run with an acrobatic layup and a 3-pointer from the wing on back-to-back possessions that pushed the VCU lead to 71-52 with 6:29 left.
  • The Rams outrebounded George Washington 34-22, including 12-6 on the offensive glass. The Rams outscored the Colonials 44-26 in the paint and 18-0 on second chance points.

NOTABLES

  • With the win the Rams snapped a two-game losing streak.
  • VCU shot 55 percent (32-of-58) from the field, including 61 percent (16-of-26) in the first half. The Rams have shot 50 percent or better from the field four times this season.
  • VCU knocked down 16-of-18 free throws in the game.
