The Short Story: After a 16-day layoff between games, the VCU Men's Soccer team returned to action Tuesday night against in-state rival Old Dominion. Time did not work in the Rams favor, as a single goal by the Monarchs in the 33rd minute would down the Rams 1-0 despite a hard-charging second half.
QUICK FACTS
- Ulrik Edvarsen led the way with three shots, while Steven Dal Molin and Francesco Amorosino would each collect a pair as well.
- Four other Rams notched a shot as Luc Fatton, Siad Haji, Rafael Andrade Santos, and Peter Pearson each got in the action.
- VCU took the shot advantage 11-10, while both teams each had six corner chances during the game. However, all six Rams corners came in the second half.
- Goalkeeper Mario Sequeira took his first collegiate loss as he made five saves on the night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Monarchs would find the first shots of the game, holding control until the 30th minute when a Luc Fatton header inside the six would be the best try by either side up to that point.
- Old Dominion would be the first team on the board in the 33rd minute, as Niko Klosterhalfen would sneak in behind the defense off a loose ball from a corner. That would give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead.
- Francesco Amorosino would get a solid chance near the end of the first half, but would get his shot saved by the goalie. That chance would round out the half for the Rams, as ODU held a 1-0 lead.
- The Rams would get two solid chances off a pair of back-to-back corners in the 51st minute. Steven Dal Molin would have a shot blocked, and Ulrik Edvarsen would have a header go wide of the net.
- VCU would kick up the offense in the final 30 minutes, but couldn't break through with a goal. Having multiple other opportunities, chances from Fatton and Edvarsen again from inside the six would each go unanswered.
- Rafael Andrade Santos turned in a strong performance down the stretch, setting up multiple scoring opportunities and getting a shot that went wide of the target.
