- VCU responded with a 7-0 run with Goodhope scoring all seven points on two free throws, a jump shot and a 3-pointer to give the Rams a 9-6 lead with 6:11 left in the first.
- Saint Joseph's then went on a 11-4 run to take a 17-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.
- The Hawks pushed their lead to 25-16 with 3:21 left in the second quarter but the Rams again responded and outscored Saint Joseph's 9-3 to only trail 28-25 at halftime.
- VCU got within one point on three different occasions during the third quarter but was unable to take the lead and faced a 45-39 deficit heading into the final frame.
