The Short Story: Amanda Tredway scored her second goal of the season in the 69th minute of the game, which led to be the game-winner for the VCU Rams in their defeat of the Liberty Flames on Sunday night. Sophomore Julia Suarez collected the other Rams score on a penalty kick in the first half.

QUICK FACTS

  • Both teams played an even match offensively, as both sides mustered nine total shots, with Liberty putting more on net with six. VCU put four of their nine shots on net.
  • Liberty also held the slight advantage on corner kick opportunities, 6-4. However, the difference came in fouls, where Liberty committed 18 fouls to VCU's seven.
  • Goalkeeper Audrey Sanderson grabbed her fourth win of the season, making five saves on six shots on goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Suarez got the party started early in the eighth minute, as a foul in the box led to a VCU penalty kick. Suarez would bury the free opportunity to put the Black and Gold up 1-0.
  • The Flames pushed on the offensive end after the VCU score, creating multiple chances in the offensive end with three shots and a corner kick into the 30th minute.
  • Liberty then tied the game up in the 33rd minute, as Isabella Habuda snuck a through pass from Bertha Martinez by Sanderson to tie things up at 1-1. The goal would be Habuda's third goal of the season.
  • As halftime approached, Liberty had a great chance at a go-ahead goal in the 44th minute, as a cross came into the six-yard box, Erica Troutman got a foot on the ball for the Flames. However, her shot sailed high over the crossbar, keeping things 1-1 into the half.
  • In the 60th minute, Ingrid Brouwer has a header opportunity in front of the net that went wide, while Megan Dell followed that up just a few minutes later with a solid shot on net that went wide of the net.
  • The Rams busted through with the go-ahead score after a solid that started with a Maddi Santo shot that got blocked. Just seconds later, after Kelly Graves got the ball, she sent a cross into the 18 yard box, where Tredway was waiting. She trapped the ball down and sniped the right side of the net to put VCU up 2-1 in the 69th minute.
  • Sanderson made two key saves as time winded down in the final four minutes, first with a great save on a shot from Jennifer Knoebel.
  • With under a minute to play, Liberty had back-to-back corner opportunities, with the final one that landed a solid header with four seconds to go. However, Sanderson was there to make the save and seal the win for VCU.
