The short story: Top-seeded VCU made quick work of No. 8 George Mason Friday, using straight set victories to earn a 4-0 win Friday in the Atlantic 10 Tournament quarterfinals in Charlottesville. The Rams advance to meet fifth-seeded Dayton Saturday at 10 a.m.
FIRST SERVE
- For the second time this season, VCU shut out the Patriots. The Rams also earned a 7-0 victory over George Mason on Feb. 26 in Richmond.
- Senior Michael Voscek cruised on the No. 1 singles court, 6-1, 6-0 over Aaron Capitel. It's Voscek's 78th career singles win. He is 16-6 in singles action in 2015-16.
- Junior Daryl Monfils picked up his team-high 17th singles win. The Paris, France native dispatched Joe Hill 6-2, 6-2 on the No. 3 court.
- Arvid Noren was also a winner in singles for the Rams. The freshman improved to 16-10 this season with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Daniel Gutierrez at the No. 5 position.
- Monfils and Noren were also victorious in doubles play for VCU.
- VCU has lost just one set in two meetings with George Mason in 2016.
