Women's Basketball thumps George Mason on Senior Night

The Short Story: VCU squared off against George Mason on senior night at the Siegel Center. The Rams took their special night to heart, exploding for a 31 point win, 65-34, over the Patriots in their final regular-season matchup at home this season. 

OPENING TIP

  • Senior Adaze Alaeze went off for a game-high 21 points on the night, ith three rebounds and an assist. No other Ram finished in double-digit points.
  • Three Rams (Jessica Ogunnorin, Keira Robinson, Curteeona Breelove) each chipped in eight points. Robinson led the team in rebounds with six, while Breelove chipped in with five.
  • Ogunnorin and Robinson each dished out a team-high three assists on the night, with senior Chadarryl Clay also tossing out three as well.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • VCU led off the game with two quick baskets, taking an early 4-0 lead.
  • George Mason recovered quickly, taking a 7-6 lead after a layup by Wright with 4:45 to play in the first.
  • Until the 4:39 mark left in the second quarter, VCU would run off a 16-0 run, capped by back-to-back buckets from Alaeze.
  • The Patriots would spin off five straight points from Taylor Brown, bringing the game back to 10 points.
  • At the halftime break, the score stood at 24-14 in favor of VCU.
  • Chinyere Bell sank six points to open the half for George Mason, helping the score back to single digits, to six points with 7:35 to play in the third quarter.
  • After getting to within four points with 5:19 to play in the third, the Rams would once again go on a run. This time, a 12-0 run to extend their lead back to 14 with 1:10 to play in the third quarter.
  • After the third quarter, the score was 41-24 with VCU ahead.
  • The Rams continued their run into the fourth, with an additional 13-0 run to begin the quarter to make their total run of 25-2 with 6:29 to play.
  • Over the final six minutes, VCU would extend their lead to 31 points, grabbing a 65-34 win. 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • As a team, the Rams controlled the boards, combining for a total of 47 rebounds, while George Mason only grabbed 30.
  • George Mason fell cold from the field all night, shooting at a 26 percent clip on the night, including 18 percent from behind the arc and 36 percent from the free throw line.
  • Both teams landed in double-digit turnovers, with the Rams willing the battle turning the ball over 11 times while the Patriots committed 17 turnovers.
  • That is the twelfth time this season the Rams have held an opponent under 50 points, and they have also held teams under 40 points in two of their last three games.
  • With the win, the Rams improve to 21-8 overall and 10-6 in the A-10. VCU will hold on to their fifth spot in the conference standings.

VCU hits the road this Saturday, Feb. 27 when they travel to Davidson for the final regular-season matchup of the season. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
