Thorpe Reaches 1000-Point Career Mark As Rams Drop Rhode Island 49-36

The Short Story: VCU women's basketball traveled to Rhode Island on Wednesday, and defeated the Rams 49-36. Junior Isis Thorpe reached the 1,000-point mark in her career during the game.

OPENING TIP

  • Curteeona Breelove had another strong showing on the court, scoring a team-high 15 points and grabbing six boards.
  • Adaeze Alaeze nearly recorded her third double-double of the season. The senior finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, two steals and an assist.
  • Keira Robinson chipped in seven points, dishing out two assists and coming away with a steal. Robinson in one of the leaders in the Atlantic 10 in assist/turnover ratio.
  • Ashley Pegram added five and Katherine Strong recorded six points off of the bench.
  • Reigning VA Lottery Student-Athlete of the Week Thorpe entered the game needing three points to rach the 1000-point mark in her career. The junior hit the landmark when she drained a three-pointer 15 seconds into the second quarter.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • VCU opened the third quarter on a 8-0 run to build a nine-point advantage with under 15 minutes remaining in regulation. The Rams extended their lead to 10, but Rhode Island end the quarter with a layup and one at the line to pull closer.
  • The teams traded free-throws in the fourth until Rhode Island made a layup to cut the lead to 40-34.
  • Layups from Alaeze and Brelove sandwiched two free-throws from Ashlee Mitchell as VCU pulled ahead by 12 late in the fourth
  • Robinson and Jessica Ogunnorin added three more from the foul line in the final seconds as the Rams moved to 7-6 in the A-10.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • VCU limited Rhode Island to just 12 field goals, holding the Rams to a 29.3 percent (12-of-41) shooting in the game.
  • Rhode Island was held to just 5-of-29 (17.2 percent) shooting from three-point range.
  • The Rams outrebounded their opponent 36 to 30 and scored 15 points off of second chance opportunities.
