The Short Story: VCU women's hoops held an opponent to under 50 points for the tenth time this season as they defeated cross-town rival Richmond 53-42 on Monday night. Curteeona Brelove scored a career-high 18 points to lead the Rams.
OPENING TIP
- Adaeze Alaeze recorded her second double-double of the season. Brelove just missed her third with seven rebounds.
- Keira Robinson reached double figures, scoring 10 points, adding four assists, four rebounds and a steal.
- Jessica Ogunnorin grabbed nine boards and Alaeze led the team with two blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- VCU trailed 13-10 after a quarter of play, but managed to take a 26-21 lead into the break. The Black and Gold is 13-2 when leading at half time.
- After trading shots all quarter, the Spiders regained the lead, and ended the third up 38-37.
- The Rams opened the fourth with a 10-0 run capped by layups from Alaeze and Robinson.
- Isis Thorpe drained back-to-back free throws with 30 seconds remaining to seal the victory.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The Rams forced double-digit turnovers once again (12) and have done so in each game this season. The Black and Gold lead the A10 in turnovers forced, turnover margin, and steals.
- VCU came up with seven steals, forcing 12 Spider turnovers. The Black & Gold scored 7 of their points off of Richmond mistakes.
- VCU outscored the Spiders in the paint 36-22 and the bench chipped in 34.
