The Short Story: After suffering back-to-back losses at home, VCU was able to rebound with a 74-72 win over Dayton on Wednesday. It was another nail biting finish for the Rams, but VCU was able to keep the Flyers at bay tonight to move back to .500 in Atlantic 10 play.
OPENING TIP
- Keira Robinson had a big night putting up a season high 20 points and dishing out nine assists.
- Ashley Pegram scored 19, the most from her this season. It is the team-high ninth game in double figures for Pegram, tying her for the team lead with Isis Thorpe.
- Thorpe scored 14 points and made three treys. The junior is now 76 points shy of 1,000 for her career and needs just 30 three-pointers to claim the program record.
- Jessica Ogunnorin nearly recorded a double-double with eight points and seven rebounds. The Stony Brook transfer also swatted two blocks.
- Adaeze Alaeze grabbed eight boards and registered five points in 31 minutes on the court.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Dayton pulled away to a 10-point advantage in the second quarter, but a 12-0 run before the end of the half, saw the Rams cut into and take the lead. Seconds before the end of the quarter, the Flyers hit a three to tie the game at 45-45.
- In the third UD quickly went up by four, but the Rams tied the game on a layup from Thorpe and took the lead when she followed it up with a three.
- Up two at the end of three, VCU took over with a 6-0 run, including five straight from Robinson, to start the fourth quarter.
- The Rams built their lead to nine on a trey from Pegram with 2:37 remaining in regulation.
- Dayton battled back to make it a one point game with under 30 seconds left to play, but the VCU held on for the program's first win over Dayton.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The Rams have forced double-digit turnovers in every game this season and lead the A10 in turnovers forced, turnover margin, and steals.
- VCU came up with nine steals, forcing 21 Dayton turnovers. The Black & Gold scored 19 of their points off of Flyers mistakes.
