Rams drop heartbreaking 1-0 overtime loss to College of Charleston

Box Score

The Basics

  • Score: Charleston 1, VCU 0 (OT)
  • Records: VCU (1-2-0), College of Charleston (1-1-0)
  • Location: SportsBackers Stadium – Richmond, Va.
  • The Short Story: Senior Emma Kruse recorded 10 saves, but it wasn't enough as the VCU women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to the College of Charleston on Friday night.
How It Happened
  • Both teams battled for momentum early before Kelly Graves nearly put the Rams on the board in the 20th minute when she took a long pass from classmate Julia Suarez, but Graves' header went just high.
  • Kruse kept VCU in the game, stifling any scoring chance by the Cougars, finishing with 10 saves in regulation, including five in the first half.
  • Freshman Nicole Malancone nearly struck the 69th minute, firing off a shot from outside the box, but it went just wide.
  • Margaret Boelman pressured the Cougar defense late in the contest, but her shot was turned away as the game headed to overtime.
  • Less than two minutes into overtime, Charleston's Jessica Schifer got loose and fired into the bottom left of the net, past a diving Kruse to claim the 1-0 win.
Quotable
  • "We must do a better job of finishing our chances. Some of our players are playing well and carrying the load for the team. We need to have others step up around them and provide some answers. The work rate was better today but Charleston did a good job of matching that intensity. We gave them a look on goal late and they put it away. A bit cruel of an ending but we must be better if we expect to win games." - Head Coach Lindsey Martin
Up Next
  • The Rams return to action on Sunday to square off with in-state rival James Madison. Gametime is slated for 7:30 p.m., as they will kick-off 30-minutes after the conclusion of the men's game, which starts at 5:00 p.m.
