The Short Story: Senior Emma Kruse made seven saves and freshman Julia Suarez ripped off seven shots, but it wasn't enough as the VCU women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to visiting Marshall. How It Happened VCU controlled possession early and drew a corner in the 10th minute that set up a great chance. Suarez lofted a pass into the box, but senior Sharon Wojcik's shot went just high as the game remained scoreless. Suarez was at it again in the 14th minute getting free in the box, her shot got by the Marshall keeper, but it was knocked away just in time by a sliding Herd defender to keep the game at 0-0. Kruse came up big in the 18th minute, making a diving save and turning away Marshall's Kelly Culicerto. However, the Thundering Herd's Ashley Seltzer got on the board just a minute later, depositing a long pass from Erin Simmons into the back of the net for a 1-0 Marshall lead. Stephanie Stahl nearly had her first collegiate goal in the 26th minute when her header off a Suarez corner was just tipped wide. With just under a minute to play in the half, freshman Kelly Graves beat her defender a fed a pass into the box for classmate Isabella Muzo, but her shot went just wide. Suarez was at it again in the second half and nearly evened the score in the 68th minute when her diving shot forced Marshall's keeper to making a leaping save. Kruse came up big again in the 74th minute, coming out to making a diving stop against Culicerto again and keeping the Rams within striking distance.
