RAMS FALL SHORT TO RIVAL RICHMOND, 55-49

Box Score

The Basics

  • Score: Richmond 55, VCU 49
  • Records: VCU (16-13, 7-9), Richmond (17-12, 9-7)
  • Location: Verizon Wireless Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center – Richmond, Va.
  • Short Story: Sophomore Camille Calhoun posted her third double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the VCU women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought 55-49 decision to crosstown rival Richmond in the regular season finale for both teams.

How It Happened

  • The Rams opened on a 9-0 run before Richmond's Janelle Hubbard got the Spiders on the board.
  • VCU maintained a lead but the Spiders started chipping away at it. Hubbard put UR within one, and a Lauren Tolson jumper gave UR its first lead of the game, 18-17.
  • The Rams closed the stanza on a 6-2 run, capped by a shot from Calhoun, to give VCU at 23-20 advantage at the break.
  • VCU opened the second half extending their lead to eight points, but the Spiders wouldn't go quietly.
  • Both teams battled back-and-forth throughout, with the Rams holding onto the lead. Richmond's Genevieve Okoro sparked a 5-0 run for the Spiders, giving them an advantage they wouldn't relinquish. VCU fought back, but the Spiders held them off, taking a 55-49 victory to close out the regular season.

Quotable

  • "Down the stretch, I thought we got some good looks at the rim, but unfortunately they didn't fall for us today. You have to give credit to Richmond, Janelle Hubbard is a terrific player. She hit a big shot and gave them a little bit of a cushion. Overall I thought our effort was definitely there." -- Head Coach Beth O'Boyle
  • "It's been a great year for us in year one, just trying to build our culture. We have a really young group, 9 sophomore and no seniors, so you go on the roller coaster with them. I think we can learn from this game, both ways. It prepares us for Thursday and like I told them after the game, everybody's record on Thursday is 0-0, and our goal is to survive and advance, and keep playing well." -- Head Coach Beth O'Boyle

Beyond the Box Score

  • Ashlee Mitchell matched a season-best five points.
